Procedure

Note:  This activity should be scheduled for a Friday or before a long weekend to allow students sufficient time for final rewrites (or reshoots if filming at home).

The students perform a “dress rehearsal” of their news shows under the same conditions as the actual filming.  The students should have access to a desk or chairs, tables, or studio (if available).  The teacher may want to tape these and allow the students to view them for critical purposes.  The students are reminded of the five minute time limit and the teacher will time the presentations ensure that the students adhere to this limit.  The students will not be allowed to use scripts, text, cue cards, etc., but appropriate props are encouraged.  The students should be told to pay special attention to Introducing segments, transitions between segments, and “signing off.”

All students are required to watch and listen to each group as they rehearse and are not allowed to work on their own presentations while another group is “on the air.”

If the students have a video camera at home and plan to film on their own, they must still “run through” these segments in class as exactly as they intend to shoot them “on location.”

This rehearsal may be extended to a second day if the students need additional time to prepare (especially if the segments run too long or if the students have difficulty making their presentations without the aid of scripts). The teacher may also wish to devote some time to allow the students to view and critique the filmed rehearsals before the “official” performances.

The students will then return to their groups for editing, rewriting, or planning their shooting schedules (if done offsite).
