Overview
The
students will produce a three to five-minute television new show and a one or
two-page newspaper. The shows will be
videotaped and converted to the RealVideo format for streaming over the
Internet and the newspapers will be converted into Adobe Acrobat PDF format for
viewing over the World Wide Web.
Time Frame
One day
Objectives
In
this lesson, students (or teacher) will:
·
convert student newspapers to PDF format
post PDF files to a web server
Materials
Computer lab (with Multimedia capable computers
and Internet access)
A configuration of at least fifteen Pentium MMX 233 MHz or faster with
color monitor, printer and 28.8 modem or faster is preferred. The Saint Ignatius High School third floor computer
lab is equipped with fifteen networked Pentium II 266 MHz student computers
with T1 Internet access, two printers, and one similar faculty computer
connected to an LCD overhead projection unit.
Web server (or an account with an Internet
Service Provider (ISP) that provides web page storage space
· Microsoft® Software Used in this Lesson
Microsoft® Office 97 Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.01
Microsoft® Word Microsoft® Works 4.0
· Other Software Used in this Lesson
Adobe Acrobat (or Exchange) 3.0 with Adobe PDF
Writer, Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0, FrontPage Express (or other compatible HTML
document editor), FTP program (or other program required by ISP to upload HTML
documents)
Procedure
If
available on every student computer, the students open the application used to
create the newspapers (for example, Microsoft Word or Microsoft Works)
and select “Print.” From “Select
Printer,” they will choose “Acrobat PDFWriter” and then select “Print.” They will be prompted to provide a filename
and a location for saving. A PDF
document that preserves all of the original formatting and images will be
created. This file can then be viewed on
multiple platforms (Macintosh, Windows, UNIX) using Adobe Acrobat Reader.
If Adobe
Acrobat is only available on one computer, the teacher will follow the same
steps outlined above to create the PDF files.
The
students (or teacher) will then create a web page (using FrontPage Express
or a similar program) to index the student newspapers. This page will later contain links to the
student video presentations (see Lesson 9). Each of the students’ newspapers will be
included as a hyperlink on this page (for an example, see http://www.ignatius.edu/turner/). For convenience, all of the files should be
placed together in a special directory (named “project,” “news,” or “videos,”
for example) and the web page should be titled “index.htm.” Relative hyperlinks (“paper1.pdf”) are
recommended over absolute hyperlinks (“http://www.school.org/project/paper1.pdf”)
so that the web page can be tested before uploading to the web server. (Consult the “Help” files or documentation of
the particular HTML editing program for complete instructions on entering and
editing hyperlinks.) It is further
suggested the size of each file be noted on this page so that viewers with a
slow Internet connection can decide whether or not to view large files.
The
web page and newspaper files should if possible be tested in a web browser
(such as Microsoft Internet Explorer) to check links and to view
formatting of PDF files. Once verified,
the folder can be loaded onto the web server.
Contact your System Administrator or ISP for complete details.
